The Professionals Speak

I Am a Professor of Journalism and Media Studies – Formerly a News Correspondent in Australia and Asia

"A crooked government which swayed a weak and pliable press prompted me to become a journalist. Good journalism underpins good governance. This can operate in a democracy like Australia or places with a restricted franchise like Hong Kong. I’ve reported on how Western reporters cover Asia and the ‘global village’; state secrecy, free speech, and journalism in China; elections and press coverage in Cambodia; freedom of the press in Thailand. Indeed, the greatest reward in this occupation is that you can occasionally expose the truth. That, and watching new generations pick up the sword of justice. To succeed in this field, you need to possess intelligence, integrity, courage, and persistence.

I’ve worked in both the print and broadcast media, including jobs with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Australian Associated Press, Nation Review, and Radio Television Hong Kong. Today, as an academic specializing in foreign correspondence and Asian studies, I write for my blog, professional journals, book chapters, and occasionally online and for print newspapers. Usually these days I am invited to write.

Aspiring international correspondents should choose the best journalism degree available from a university. Look for one where the teachers combine practical experience with scholarship. Then write, blog, and interview as much as you can, creating your own portfolio."

I Am a Freelance Journalist Specializing in Occupational Health and Safety and Other Wellness Topics

"I became interested in journalism when I took a 12-month, mainly self-funded, research study tour of employee health, fitness and safety around the world. In addition to traveling through the United States and Canada, I also visited Japan, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Australia. I decided that there was not enough being written on this topic in Australia, so I approached the country’s leading business newspaper – Australian Financial Review – to write articles for the newspaper’s heath and safety supplement. For the next 10 years, I wrote most of the articles published in that supplement.

After I studied biology and chemistry in college, I worked in scientific research. Then I studied occupational safety and health (OSH) training, recreation, and physical education. I am presently a multi-lingual journalist. I write about manufacturing, OSH, human resources, nanotechnology, logistics, trade, export, mental health, and international relations for international media outlets. I am also a lecturer in journalism, cross-cultural awareness in business and customer service, and conducting business and trade with different countries. As you can see, I have many professional interests!

I recently spoke at a high school event to a large group of 15-year-olds who were learning Japanese, and I said that one of the most important aspects of my career preparation was to learn several languages. Japanese and German have featured very strongly in my career, so I cannot emphasize too strongly how important it is to learn different languages if you want to be an international journalist. I also worked as a scientist in Germany for three years, and I travel to Japan and now Korea every year for work-related activities.
